Wee Ee Cheong is a seasoned banking veteran with over four decades of experience in the industry. As the CEO of UOB for the past 16 years, he has been instrumental in leading the bank to its current position as the leading consumer and SME bank in Southeast Asia. Under his leadership, UOB has emerged as the third-largest company in Singapore with a valuation of US$33.36 billion.

Wee Ee Cheong’s tenure as CEO has been marked by significant achievements. In the past year, he orchestrated UOB’s largest merger and acquisition in a decade, encompassing Citi’s retail business in four key markets. Additionally, he spearheaded the launch of UOB’s flagship digital bank, which further solidified the bank’s position in the industry.
Record-Breaking Profits and Recognition
Under Wee’s leadership, UOB achieved record core net profits of S$4.8 billion (US$3.64 billion) in the previous year, reflecting an impressive 18% increase from the previous year. His remarkable contributions did not go unnoticed, earning him the CEO Leadership Achievement in Singapore accolade by Asian Banker.
Wee’s exceptional performance also translated into a 30.2% increase in his annual salary, reaching S$14.2 million (US$10.78 million) in 2022.
A Legacy in Banking
Wee Ee Cheong’s connection to banking runs deep, as the son of banking pioneer and UOB founder and chairman, Dr. Wee Cho Yaw. With more than three decades of experience within UOB, he has held increasingly senior roles, including president and deputy chairman of the bank, before assuming the role of CEO in 2007.
In addition to his role as CEO, Wee serves as the chairman of UOB China and holds directorships in several UOB subsidiaries. He also serves as a director of The Institute of Banking & Finance, further contributing to the development and progress of the financial sector.
