Xie Yao Quan and Christopher de Souza Nominated as Deputy Speakers of Parliament


Singapore’s parliament is set to nominate Xie Yao Quan and Christopher de Souza for election as Deputy Speakers, Deputy Leader of the House Zaqy Mohamad announced on Friday, September 12.

Mr de Souza previously served as Deputy Speaker from 2020 to 2025, alongside Ms Jessica Tan, and brings experience from his previous term to the role. Mr Xie, on the other hand, is being nominated for the first time, marking his debut in the Deputy Speaker position.

The nomination reflects the ongoing efforts of parliament to ensure smooth legislative operations and continuity in parliamentary leadership. Deputy Speakers play a key role in assisting the Speaker in presiding over debates, maintaining order, and facilitating discussions in the House.

The formal election of the Deputy Speakers will follow parliamentary procedures, providing members an opportunity to vote on the nominations. Both candidates are expected to contribute to parliamentary processes with their experience and commitment to public service.
