Singapore’s Yiwei Athletic Association Lion Dance Troupe Retains Crown at Genting World Championship
Singapore’s lion dance tradition has once again shone brightly on the world stage, as the Yiwei Athletic Association successfully defended its title at the 15th Genting World Lion Dance Championship held on July 27. After breaking Malaysia’s long-standing 13-year dominance at the event in 2023, Yiwei’s remarkable back-to-back victory is a testament to their dedication, skill, and passion for preserving and elevating this ancient cultural art form.
The Prestigious Genting World Lion Dance Championship
The Genting World Lion Dance Championship is one of the most prestigious competitions for lion dance troupes globally, held biennially at the Genting Highlands in Malaysia. Since its inception, the competition has attracted the best teams from across Asia and beyond, all vying to demonstrate their mastery over the intricate blend of martial arts, acrobatics, and cultural expression that lion dance demands.
For over a decade, Malaysia held an unchallenged grip on the championship title, captivating audiences with powerful and expertly choreographed performances. However, in 2023, Singapore’s Yiwei Athletic Association disrupted this dominance, claiming the grand champion title and signaling a new era of fierce competition.
Yiwei Athletic Association: A Legacy of Excellence
The Yiwei Athletic Association is no stranger to success. Founded with the mission of promoting traditional Chinese martial arts and lion dance, the troupe has grown over the years into one of Singapore’s premier cultural ambassadors. Their performances are renowned for their precision, energy, and creativity, combining traditional lion dance elements with modern choreography and athleticism.
At the 15th edition of the championship, Yiwei showcased its strength by entering two teams of eight performers each—a bold move that demonstrated not only their depth of talent but also their strategic confidence.
The Competition and the Performances
The lion dance competition is more than just entertainment; it is a high-stakes contest judged on multiple criteria, including technical skill, synchronization, difficulty of movements, expression, and overall presentation. The teams perform a sequence of acrobatic stunts, martial arts techniques, and symbolic gestures, all under the watchful eyes of expert judges.
Yiwei’s teams delivered electrifying performances, embodying the spirit of the lion—agile, powerful, and majestic. Their routines included complex jumps, balance maneuvers on narrow poles, and expressive movements that told stories rooted in Chinese folklore and tradition.
Dual Success: Team B Crowned Champions, Team A Takes Runner-Up
In an impressive display of dominance, Yiwei’s Team B was crowned the grand champion with a near-perfect score of 9.78 out of 10. Not far behind, Team A secured the first runner-up position with a strong score of 9.66. This remarkable one-two finish underlines the troupe’s unparalleled skill and dedication.
Winning both the top positions at a world-class event is rare and speaks volumes about the rigorous training, teamwork, and artistic vision that Yiwei brings to every performance. It also sets a high standard for competitors worldwide and signals that Singapore’s lion dance troupes are among the best in the world.
Breaking Malaysia’s 13-Year Streak
Malaysia’s hold on the Genting World Lion Dance Championship for 13 consecutive years was a testament to their rich lion dance culture and the quality of their troupes. Yiwei’s victory in 2023 was a landmark moment, showing that the balance of power in the lion dance community could shift.
Their consecutive win in 2025 further solidifies Singapore’s rising prominence in this traditional art form. It also sparks a healthy rivalry between neighboring countries, inspiring innovation and pushing all participants to higher levels of performance.
The Cultural Significance of Lion Dance
Lion dance is more than a vibrant spectacle; it is deeply rooted in Chinese culture and tradition. Performed during festivals, especially Chinese New Year, and important celebrations, the lion dance is believed to bring good luck, ward off evil spirits, and usher in prosperity.
The dance requires immense physical fitness, coordination, and a deep understanding of symbolic gestures and rhythms. It combines martial arts, acrobatics, and theatrical performance, making it a challenging yet rewarding cultural practice.
For the performers at Yiwei, lion dance is also a way to connect with their heritage and pass on traditions to younger generations. Their success on the international stage highlights the ongoing relevance and vitality of this cultural treasure.
Training, Teamwork, and Dedication
Behind the scenes of every championship-winning routine lies countless hours of training and preparation. The members of Yiwei Athletic Association endure rigorous physical conditioning and technical practice to perfect their craft.
Teamwork is crucial. Each lion costume requires two performers who must synchronize their movements flawlessly to bring the lion to life. The performers must also coordinate with other team members during complex sequences that involve stunts on poles and other challenging props.
Yiwei’s trainers and coaches are veterans who emphasize discipline, creativity, and respect for tradition. Their holistic approach ensures that performers develop not only technical skills but also a deep appreciation for the cultural significance of lion dance.
