Singapore’s Cheongsam Legend Laichan Goh Passes Away at 62 – A Legacy Sewn Into Fashion History

Remembering Laichan Goh: The Man Who Modernised the Cheongsam

Singapore has lost one of its most iconic fashion voices. Laichan Goh, the beloved designer widely regarded as the godfather of modern cheongsam, passed away peacefully on April 14 at the age of 62, after quietly battling brain cancer for seven years.

While his name may be most closely tied to the timeless beauty of the cheongsam, Goh’s influence stretched across Singapore’s fashion, arts, and cultural scenes, leaving behind a legacy stitched with elegance, innovation, and love for tradition.

A Peaceful Goodbye Surrounded by Loved Ones

Goh passed away at Assisi Hospice, surrounded by 30 to 40 close family members and friends, according to his sister, Michelle Goh, a retired jewellery designer.

“He was peaceful, and we were all there with him,” she shared, reflecting on her brother’s final moments.

Laichan was the 13th of 15 siblings—a large, close-knit family that played an important role in shaping the creative spirit he became known for.

From Liang Court to Orchard Road: A Designer’s Journey

Laichan Goh may not have had formal fashion training, but he had something more valuable—an instinctive eye for elegance and a deep respect for cultural heritage.

He opened his first boutique in the 1980s at the now-demolished Liang Court, introducing Singaporeans to a new take on traditional Chinese wear. His designs quickly gained attention for their graceful silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and modern reinterpretation of the classic cheongsam.

Later, he opened Laichan, his namesake atelier at Mandarin Gallery on Orchard Road, where his work continued to draw admirers from across the region.

Reinventing Tradition with a Contemporary Twist

Laichan didn’t just design cheongsams—he reimagined them.

While the traditional cheongsam is known for its stiff formality, Goh’s versions were fluid, flattering, and incredibly wearable. His designs maintained the elegance of the original, but added modern cuts, lightweight fabrics, and contemporary flair. They were loved by society women, celebrities, and dignitaries alike.

He often said that fashion was not just about beauty, but about confidence. His cheongsams weren’t costumes—they were living art that allowed women to feel strong, sensual, and proud of their heritage.

Beyond Fashion: A Creative Force Across the Arts

Goh’s talent wasn’t limited to couture. Over the years, he also created costumes for stage and screen, working with theatre productions and films to bring characters to life through fabric and design.

He was especially passionate about bespoke work, preferring to work closely with clients to create one-of-a-kind pieces that told their stories.

No Formal Training, But a Natural Gift

What’s remarkable about Laichan Goh’s story is that he never studied fashion formally. His skills were self-taught and honed through passion, trial, and intuition.

He was deeply inspired by classic Chinese aesthetics, but also by the modern woman. His designs reflected that fusion—where East meets West, tradition meets innovation, and history meets personal expression.

Tributes Pour In for a Fashion Icon

Since the news of his passing broke, tributes have flooded social media from former clients, fellow designers, and longtime fans.

Many spoke of his warm, soft-spoken nature, his attention to detail, and how he made everyone feel beautiful. To his customers, he wasn’t just a designer—he was a trusted confidante and a quiet revolutionary in the fashion world.

A Legacy That Will Live On

Though Laichan Goh is no longer with us, his legacy is deeply woven into Singapore’s cultural fabric.

His designs will continue to be worn, remembered, and celebrated—not just for their beauty, but for the confidence and pride they inspired in generations of women.

“Fashion fades, but style is eternal,” Yves Saint Laurent once said—and in Laichan’s case, his style will forever be part of Singapore’s identity.

Final Thoughts

Laichan Goh showed us that elegance doesn’t have to shout—it can speak softly and still move hearts. He took a traditional garment and gave it new life, bridging generations and showing how fashion can honour the past while embracing the present.

He may have left the runway, but his spirit will continue to walk beside every woman who slips into one of his timeless creations.
