Singapore Ministers to Sue Bloomberg Over “Libellous” Article; Major CPF Changes Coming in 2025

Singapore Ministers Take Legal Action Against Bloomberg Over Property Allegations

Singapore’s ministers for Home Affairs and Law, K Shanmugam, and Manpower, Dr. Tan See Leng, are taking legal action against Bloomberg for publishing a “libellous” article regarding secretive property deals. The article, titled “Singapore mansion deals are increasingly shrouded in secrecy,” was published on December 12, 2023, and claimed that the ministers’ transactions involving good class bungalows (GCBs) were part of a broader, secretive trend in Singapore’s luxury property market.

The article caused significant uproar, as it implied that the ministers had engaged in transactions hidden from the public eye. In response, both Shanmugam and Tan have vowed to take legal action, not only against Bloomberg but also against any other media outlets that repeated or amplified these allegations. The ministers cited defamation as the basis for their legal action and demanded accountability for spreading false information.

CPF Changes for 2025: Key Updates You Need to Know

Starting January 1, 2025, several important updates will be implemented for members of Singapore’s Central Provident Fund (CPF). These changes will impact various accounts and retirement savings plans. Here’s a breakdown of the key updates:

1. Lower Interest Rates for Special, MediSave, and Retirement Accounts

One of the most notable changes is the reduction in the interest rate for the Special Account (SA), MediSave Account, and Retirement Account. The interest rate will drop to 4% per annum for the first quarter of 2025.

  • Ordinary Account (OA) interest will remain at 2.5%.
  • For those 55 and above, there will continue to be additional interest to help boost retirement savings.

2. CPF Salary Ceiling Adjusted to $7,400

The CPF salary ceiling will be raised to $7,400 to reflect the growing wage levels in Singapore. This will affect the amount of CPF contributions for employees earning above the previous ceiling.

3. Increase in Healthcare Savings

The Basic Healthcare Sum (BHS) will increase to $75,500 for CPF members under 65. This change aims to enhance healthcare savings and ensure members are better prepared for medical expenses.

4. Closure of Special Accounts for Seniors

A major change is the closure of the Special Account (SA) for senior citizens. The balances in these accounts will be transferred to the Retirement Account (RA), further streamlining the savings process for seniors. This adjustment will allow for a smoother transition as members approach retirement age.

5. Enhanced Retirement Sum (ERS) to Rise

The Enhanced Retirement Sum (ERS) will see an increase, offering higher payouts for CPF members who top up their Retirement Accounts. This change is designed to encourage members to save more for their retirement years and ensure a more comfortable future.

These changes are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to bolster the CPF system and help Singaporeans better prepare for retirement, healthcare, and future needs.
