Sea Group CEO Focuses on Efficiency Across E-Commerce and Gaming

Sea Group CEO Forrest Li again emphasized that Sea Group, as a technology company, will continue to prioritize efficiency, especially in its main businesses such as its e-commerce platform, Shopee, and its online gaming subsidiary, Garena, as it enters a more disciplined phase of growth. Discussing Sea Group’s strategy, Sea Group’s CEO again made clear that efficiency, cost management, and profitability are now major focus areas for Sea Group.

As reported, this change of strategy does not indicate that the company steps back from growth, but it is a move to readjust growth quality. The CEO of Sea Group said, “As we said, we want to double down on areas where we think we have a deep Moat,” meaning that this adjustment of strategy takes into account that the company wants to focus more on places where they already possess a “strong Moat,” or a competitive advantage, and less on projects that either involve a lot of money or a poor ROI.

Within the e-commerce industry, Shopee continues to be the largest business of the Sea Group and one of its primary areas where it is focusing on improving efficiencies. According to its CEO, it continues to improve areas like logistics optimization, optimizing incentives for sellers, and operational excellence. Shopee continues to improve supply chain solutions using technology and optimizing marketing and promotion spends.

The CEOFurther, the CEO explained how the strategy for Shopee has shifted to give more emphasis to its unit economics, especially in the key markets in Southeast Asia. Instead of expanding the e-commerce platform as rapidly as possible, Shopee is now focused on building its ecosystem and supporting its sellers.

Sea Group’s gaming subsidiary, Garena, is also experiencing a transformation for greater efficiency and a more sustainable business model. In fact, the CEO has recognized the challenges experienced globally in the gaming sector, such as the slowing growth of gamers and the increased cost of game development. Consequently, the company is focusing on its core games and being frugal in the development of new games.

“Our strategy focuses on keeping players engaged in the games that we already have in the marketplace, rather than rushing to put out more content that may not pull in sustained returns over time,” said the CEO.

Apart from the e-commerce and gaming areas, the impact on the company’s organisational change has also been mentioned by the CEO. Within the organisation, processes have been made more efficient by eliminating redundant work and faster decision-making. More robust metrics have been introduced for performance measurement, which ensures teams’ accountability on profitability and efficiency, while still being flexible in the dynamic digital economy.

The CEO pointed out that technology and automation are also becoming key drivers in improving the efficiencies of the group. This follows increased spending by Sea Group in the development of artificial intelligence, data analytics, and other automation tools that can help it optimise prices, inventory, and customer engagement. This move aims to enhance productivity without undermining service quality.

Although cost discipline is expedited, the CEO emphasized that Sea Group is always bullish on the digital economy in Southeast Asia. The increasing usage rate of the internet, the adoption of digital payments, and the rising middle class pose a huge opportunity for e-commerce companies and digital entertainment platforms. Sea Group is gearing up with strategies that will make it a major part of this growth story.

Addressing investors, the CEO stated that the efficiency drive by the Sea Group is intended to ensure the company is more resistant to market fluctuations. The company believes that by fixing the fundamentals now, the company will be better suited to exploit future opportunities once the market improves. In wrapping up his speech, the CEO emphasized that “efficiency and innovation are not, in fact, mutually exclusive.” Indeed, the strategy that the Sea Group pursues is to “embed efficiency into our operating culture, so that every dollar we spend on every initiative matters and drives value creation.” By executing well in their e-commerce and gaming businesses, the company hopes to “lock in our leadership in Southeast Asia’s digital technology sector.”
