Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to Engage Chinese Leaders on Geopolitical Stability

SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to make his first official visit to China as Singapore’s premier from June 22 to June 26, aiming to discuss cooperation with Chinese leadership to strengthen the rules-based international order and address regional and global geopolitical challenges.

Announced by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun on June 20, the visit will see PM Wong meet with key Chinese officials including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Zhao Leji, Chairman of the National People’s Congress.


Navigating a Complex Global Landscape

In an interview with Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, PM Wong reflected on the current state of global affairs, describing the world as being in “a state of flux.” He stressed the importance of all countries, regardless of size or power, playing their part in managing geopolitical tensions carefully to minimize risks of conflict and war.

“Countries big and small have to do their part to manage geopolitical tensions and rivalry carefully so as to minimise the risk of conflict and war,” said PM Wong, underscoring Singapore’s commitment to regional stability and multilateral cooperation.


Strengthening Multilateralism and the Rules-Based Order

A key focus of the visit will be to engage Chinese leaders on broader regional and global developments, exploring avenues for collaboration to uphold multilateralism and the international rules-based system.

PM Wong highlighted the importance of Singapore and China working together to strengthen multilateralism, which is essential for global peace, security, and sustainable development.


Building Closer Ties with Chinese Leadership

Beyond policy discussions, PM Wong expressed his intention to build closer personal ties with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang during the visit, reflecting the importance Singapore places on fostering strong bilateral relations with China.
