Indranee Rajah: AI Can Reduce Inequality If Deployed Fairly

Singapore’s Second Minister for Finance, Indranee Rajah, has highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to narrow social and economic inequalities—if the technology is implemented inclusively. Speaking on a post-Budget edition of The Usual Place podcast, Ms Indranee stressed that all Singaporeans, especially those from lower-income households, must have access to AI and the skills to use it effectively.

AI as a Social Leveller

Ms Indranee explained that intentional deployment of AI can help:

  • Provide equal opportunities for learning and employment.
  • Bridge gaps in access to services and education.
  • Support productivity and skill development across all income groups.

“If rolled out intentionally, AI can be a great social leveller,” she said, emphasizing the need for targeted policies to ensure equitable access.

Education and Skills Are Key

A critical part of leveraging AI for social benefit, Ms Indranee noted, is education and digital literacy. Citizens must understand and be trained to use AI tools effectively to ensure that the technology benefits everyone, rather than widening existing gaps between high- and low-income communities.

Programs may include:

  • Digital skills training for adults and students.
  • Public awareness campaigns on AI applications.
  • Support for businesses and individuals adopting AI to improve productivity.

Context: Singapore’s AI Strategy

The remarks followed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s Budget statement, which outlined Singapore’s vision for harnessing technology to drive economic growth. AI is a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to remain competitive globally while also addressing societal challenges such as inequality and access to opportunities.

Takeaway

Singapore’s leadership is framing AI not just as an economic tool, but as a means to strengthen social equity. By ensuring accessibility, education, and thoughtful implementation, AI could become a powerful driver for opportunity, bridging gaps across income and social lines while supporting sustainable national growth.
