Green Shipping and Digital Innovation Anchor Motion Ventures’ New US$100 Million Maritime Fund

Motion Ventures Backs Next-Gen Maritime Tech With Ambitious New Fund

[SINGAPORE] – Motion Ventures, a venture firm focused on maritime innovation, is doubling down on the future of green shipping and digital transformation. The firm has launched a new fund targeting US$100 million, with over half of that already committed by investors.

This second fund follows the success of its initial S$30 million fund, launched four years ago. Founder and general partner Shaun Hon said the goal is to accelerate adoption of breakthrough technologies across the maritime sector — from decarbonised vessels to tools that improve seafarer productivity.

Investing in the Future of Shipping

Motion Ventures sees a critical opportunity to reshape one of the world’s oldest and largest industries. Despite historically slow adoption of technology, the maritime sector is now under increasing pressure to evolve, especially with climate targets looming.

“We’re betting on technologies that will define the next generation of maritime innovation,” said Hon.

The new fund will focus on:

  • Green shipping solutions, including electric vessels and alternative fuels
  • Digital tools that enhance operational efficiency, safety, and crew effectiveness
  • Collaborative innovation, fostering stronger ties between portfolio startups and corporate maritime investors

Momentum Builds with Climate Targets in Sight

The push for innovation is fueled in part by global regulatory pressure. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a goal for the shipping industry to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, prompting a wave of investment in sustainability-focused technologies.

Companies are now racing to adopt:

  • Electric propulsion systems
  • Hydrogen and ammonia-based fuels
  • Advanced data platforms and automation for vessels

Hon believes that meaningful impact will come from “not just funding startups, but embedding them within the maritime value chain.” That includes collaboration with industry giants, ports, and logistics firms.

Track Record and Ecosystem Support

Motion Ventures’ first fund invested in several startups working on maritime logistics, autonomous navigation, and ship performance analytics. The firm has also built partnerships with major maritime corporates, helping bridge the gap between innovation and implementation.

Its collaborative approach has been praised for enabling early-stage companies to pilot and scale solutions directly within the industry.

What’s Next for the Maritime Innovation Landscape?

As shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global emissions, there’s an urgent need to transform how cargo moves around the world. The fund’s focus aligns with growing demand for:

  • Sustainable supply chain practices
  • Greener ocean freight alternatives
  • Digital efficiency tools to cut costs and emissions

Motion Ventures is positioning itself at the heart of this transformation — with capital, connections, and a vision to help maritime tech scale at speed.
