China’s Top Legislator Champions “Asian Security Model” and Global Growth Role

In a major address at the Boao Forum for Asia on Thursday, China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, outlined a vision for regional security and economic development, positioning Beijing as a key driver of global growth. He emphasized a cooperative approach to security in Asia while criticizing what he called power politics and bullying on the international stage.

Advocating an “Asian Security Model”

Zhao Leji proposed what he described as an “Asian security model”, aimed at fostering stability and collaboration among countries in the region. He stressed that Asia should rely on dialogue and mutual respect rather than confrontation, warning that unilateral actions or coercion could destabilize regional peace.

The model promotes shared responsibility for security, stronger regional institutions, and multilateral cooperation to address challenges such as territorial disputes, cyber threats, and transnational crime. Zhao positioned this approach as an alternative to externally imposed frameworks that, in his view, prioritize the interests of a few powerful nations over the collective well-being of Asia.

Pushing Back Against Power Politics

In his keynote, Zhao also criticized the use of power politics and intimidation in international relations. He called out practices that involve bullying smaller nations or pressuring neighbors, framing them as harmful to global stability and economic growth.

He highlighted that Asia’s future depends on countries working together on equal footing rather than succumbing to coercion or competition-driven rivalries. Zhao’s remarks underline China’s desire to present itself as a stabilizing force and a champion of sovereignty and mutual respect in regional affairs.

Beijing as a Global Growth Engine

Beyond security, Zhao positioned China as a key driver of global economic growth. He emphasized the country’s role in international trade, investment, and development projects, portraying Beijing as a partner for other nations seeking growth opportunities.

He highlighted initiatives aimed at boosting connectivity, technology transfer, and sustainable development across Asia, suggesting that China’s economic strategy can support broader regional prosperity. Zhao’s remarks came amid concerns about global economic uncertainty, energy volatility, and geopolitical tensions, signaling China’s intention to strengthen its influence as a stabilizing economic force.

Implications for Asia and the World

Zhao’s address reflects China’s growing ambition to shape regional security frameworks and assert leadership in global economic growth. The “Asian security model” concept could influence diplomatic and security discussions in the region, particularly as countries seek alternatives to reliance on external powers.

At the same time, positioning China as a growth engine highlights Beijing’s intention to expand trade, investment, and development ties, reinforcing its role as a central player in shaping Asia’s economic future.
