Singapore’s Population Hits 6.11 Million, Driven by Non-Resident Growth

Singapore’s total population reached a record 6.11 million as of June 2025, according to the latest data released by the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) of the Prime Minister’s Office. The increase, marking a 1.2% rise from June 2024, is primarily attributed to the growth in the non-resident population.

Breakdown of Singapore’s Population

Of the 6.11 million residents in Singapore:

  • Singaporeans: Approximately 3.66 million
  • Permanent Residents: Around 0.54 million
  • Non-Residents: 1.91 million

The report highlights that the non-resident population continues to be the main driver of growth, increasing 2.7% from 1.86 million in June 2024.

Key Contributors to Non-Resident Population Growth

The surge in non-residents is mainly due to:

  • Work Permit Holders: Representing the largest segment of new non-resident residents
  • Migrant Domestic Workers: A significant contributor to the overall increase

Despite the growth, the pace of foreign employment in Singapore has remained stable compared to previous years, showing a consistent trend in the country’s reliance on foreign labor to support economic activities.

Implications for Singapore

The increase in Singapore’s non-resident population underscores the city-state’s continued need for foreign talent to support industries ranging from construction and manufacturing to domestic work. It also highlights the importance of balancing population growth with sustainable urban planning, infrastructure development, and public services.

Policymakers may need to address the challenges of a growing population, such as housing, transportation, and healthcare, while ensuring that Singaporeans continue to benefit from economic growth.

Looking Ahead

With the population expected to continue rising, Singapore’s authorities are focusing on strategies to maintain quality of life and talent management. This includes initiatives to attract skilled workers, regulate foreign employment, and support social integration of permanent residents and non-residents.

The 6.11 million mark is a milestone for Singapore, reflecting both its global attractiveness for talent and its evolving demographic landscape.
